Daimler said it has successfully completed a yearlong consumer test of its electric battery-powered Fuso Canter E-Cell.

The company tested eight trucks in Portugal, where the vehicles achieved a range of more than 62 miles and a payload of 2 tons, according to Daimler.

The “Zero Emission” truck proved adequate for everyday use by customers using the vehicle for purposes such as waste hauling, forest maintenance and deliveries, according to the manufacturer.

“The results of the trials prove that we are on the right track. The customers in the test trial experienced the Canter E-Cell as an efficient and reliable concept fully meeting the demands of urban delivery transport,” Marc Llistosella, president of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp., said in a statement.

“The vehicle underlines our commitment to thinking ahead and developing sustainable and reliable transportation solutions to the benefit of our customers and society as a whole,” he added.

The research project was co-funded by the Portuguese government’s Public Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation.
