ASHINGTON — The president of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Peter Hurst, said it would be “a definite challenge” for U.S. and Canadian authorities to implement criminal background checks on hazardous materials drivers in time to meet looming U.S. deadlines.

Hurst, in remarks to reporters and editors at the Transportation Table forum here June 27, repeatedly used that phrasing to warn that lots of planning remained for agencies that would have to meet U.S. deadlines of September and November to screen hazmat drivers.

CVSA represents state, provincial and local truck and bus safety inspectors in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

His remarks came as two other key organizations, representing tank carriers and state motor vehicle agency chiefs, called for the U.S. government to delay its schedule to require the background checks.
