Cummins, Eaton Unveil Heavy-Duty Powertrain

Engine maker Cummins Inc. and component manufacturer Eaton Corp. unveiled a new powertrain package for the North American heavy-duty truck market that they said will boost fuel economy by 3% to 6%.

The new product, which the two companies said also would lower preventive maintenance costs and total life cycle cost improvements, was unveiled at American Trucking Associations’ annual Technology & Maintenance Council meeting on Sunday.

The system, which combines an Eaton Fuller Advantage Series automated transmission with new Cummins ISX15 SmartTorque2 ratings, will be available this fall for linehaul, regional haul and less-than- truckload applications.

Through a combination of hardware and software enhancements, the powertrain package includes integrated power, fuel and shifting strategies to provide higher fuel economy for both linehaul and regional haul applications.

The powertrain’s optimized engine and transmission communications and new control logic further enable engine downspeeding in the overdrive position and the effective use of direct-drive technology in operational conditions required for a blend of perfect efficiency, the companies said.
