COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins Inc. and China’s Beiqi Foton Motor Co. unveiled a new truck model here for the Chinese market that will be powered by the Cummins ISG engine.

The companies officially announced the launch of the Foton Daimler Auman GTL “super power” truck at Cummins Technical Center in an April 8 ceremony that included dozens of U.S. and Chinese truck executives and media outlets.

Foton Daimler Automotive Co. is a joint venture between Foton and Daimler AG. The truck will be manufactured in Beijing.

“Through joint-venture cooperation with Cummins and Daimler, respectively, and by leveraging the complementary strengths of Cummins, Foton and Daimler, we are able to provide customers the values and benefits they care about most,” said Wang Jinyu, general manager of Foton, China’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.

Foton and Cummins initially partnered on the Cummins ISF light-duty engine platform in 2008.

“The cooperation on ISG is a natural extension of the successful integration of Cummins ISF engine and Foton trucks,” said Steve Chapman, Cummins Group vice president for China and Russia.

“We expect that the successful application of Cummins ISG engine in Foton trucks will make a unique contribution, as Foton is poised to expand its business even faster in the years ahead,” Chapman said. “The G Series global design approach is a vivid demonstration of how Cummins is transforming from a multinational to a truly global company.”

Cummins initially announced its new global heavy-duty engine platform late last year.

Additional coverage of the Cummins truck and engine launch event will be in the April 14 print edition of Transport Topics.
