The California Trucking Association opposes regulations that would allow only newer, lower-emission trucks access to marine terminals, the Fresno Bee newspaper reported.

CTA said the plan violates federal interstate commerce laws and undermines trucking deregulation rules established in 1980, the paper reported.

The association is considering filing suit if the plan is implemented this summer, but members would prefer to reach a compromise, one CTA member said.

Port authorities defended the proposal, which is supported by environmental and labor organizations, the Bee said.

Port of Long Beach operations chief J. Christopher Lytle said the plan is needed to help improve air quality in the region, the paper reported.
