CTA Asks For Environmental Technology Exceptions

The Canadian Trucking Alliance called on provincial governments to act swiftly to make regulations to allow weight and length considerations for technologies associated with CTA's enviroTruck program.

In a presentation in Toronto, CTA told the National Task Force on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions that such regulatory changes would help the Canadian trucking industry to remain competitive while helping the environment, the organization said.

Specifically, CTA has asked:

• for a 1,000-pound exemption from gross vehicle weight limits for auxilliary power units and new engine technology;

• that wide based tires be permitted at 9,000 kilograms per axle from Ontario east and 8,500 kilograms from Manitoba west to allow parity with duals on drive axles;

• for the ability for carriers to incorporate more fuel efficient boat tails on their trailer fleets without dimension penalties;

• that additional weight exemptions are explored for trailer skirts and other aerodynamic options;

• that length and weight considerations be given for moose bumpers.

CTA said it remains optimistic that governments will understand the importance of this technology and the importance of the exemptions.
