Court Nixes NBC Award To Carrier

A federal appellate court in Boston reversed an award of $525,000 that NBC television news was ordered to pay a Maine trucking company owner, his wife and one of his drivers.

On March 7, the court sent two issues back to a U.S. District Court for a new trial, but reversed the judgment of the jury on four other claims. The three people had sued NBC over a “Dateline” segment on trucking.

“I’m very disappointed by the judicial system we have,” said Ray Veilleux, owner of Classic Carriers from his office in Waterville, Maine.

“What’s the point of going to a jury when at every count it can be overturned,” he said, adding that his company remains stigmatized by the program on tired truckers.
