U.S. consumer confidence improved in September, according to the Reuters/University of Michigan monthly consumer sentiment index released Friday.

The final index for the month was a reading of 73.5, up from a preliminary reading of 70.2 and a 65.7 reading in August.

An improvement in confidence may increase consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of the economy.
