Cat to Unveil New Engine Said to Satisfy EPA Limits

Caterpillar Inc. (CAT), with a little help from the Environmental Protection Agency, could be holding a strong hand in the high stakes game of engine development.

The Peoria, Ill., company is set to debut its newest line of diesel engines March 6. These are reduced-emissions engines that Caterpillar hopes will be certified by EPA in time for sale to truck makers and fleets to use after October 2002, company spokesman Ray Hartwell said.

Unless EPA grants the requests of competing manufacturers to push back the date that cleaner diesel engines are to be on the market, Caterpillar believes it could be the only company with an engine certified for sale, at least for heavy-duty applications, according to Hartwell.
