Carriers Call for Better Safety Statistics in First of FMCSA 'Listening Sessions'

AN DIEGO — Trucking executives told Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration officials here that they wanted more accurate safety statistics about their companies and that the agency’s compliance reviews should be less intrusive.

The Sept. 21 exchange was the first of FMCSA’s six “listening sessions” scheduled to be held through Oct. 26 as part of the agency’s Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 initiative to overhaul how it should operate by that year.

FMCSA compliance reviews, or CRs, “are the backbone of the agency’s program [and] our only method for assessing safety” right now, said Bill Quade, enforcement office division chief.
