Carrier Transicold is rolling out two additional models in its Vector trailer refrigeration product line, the company said.

The 8700 and 8800MT models include what Atlanta-based Carrier argues is an enhanced version of the smart engine used by the company’s existing models, with their most common applications set to be in 48- and 53-foot over-the-road longhaul refrigerated trailers.

Carrier said the new models offer higher efficiency and significantly reduced emissions, leading to lifetime compliance with the California Air Resources Board’s emissions rules for trailer refrigeration systems.

Among the emissions reductions, Carrier said, are 96% lower particulate emissions compared with standard Vector units. Carrier said the models would also produce the Vector range’s lowest hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions.

The upgraded engine used in both models utilizes common-rail fuel injection, which Carrier says reduces fuel consumption by 5% to 10%. Also, a newly offered third speed, to be known as “eco speed,” cuts engine RPM levels when possible, it said.

Carrier’s latest models use R-452A refrigerant, which it said has a global warming potential 45% lower than that of the traditional R-404A transport unit refrigerant.

In April, Carrier launched two new models for midsized and large trucks that also use the upgraded refrigerant. The 40XR and 50XR models succeeded Carrier’s X series models.

The company’s Vector line has five models for over-the-road trailers:

  • Two single-temperature options: 8500 or 8700;
  • Three multi-temperature options: 8600MT, 8611MT and 8800MT.

“The new Vector 8700 single-temperature unit and Vector 8800MT multi-temperature unit build upon the legacy of E-Drive, the all-electric refrigeration technology pioneered and refined by Carrier Transicold, and used by thousands of fleets worldwide,” said Bill Maddox, Carrier Transicold senior manager of product management, truck trailer Americas.

Carrier Transicold is a unit of Carrier Global Corp. The parent company said July 27 that truck and trailer sales were the standout products in the second quarter of 2023 for its refrigeration division, with North American sales rising 10% year-over-year.
