California air regulators announced plans to require the owners of 1.25 million diesel engines to install filters to catch fine pollution particles.

The multilayered plan would affect almost every diesel engine in the state — trucks, buses, and off-road equipment as well as stationary sources such as generators.
The proposal by the California Air Resources Board also includes the possibility of idling restrictions and annual emissions inspections for trucks. The retrofit portion of the plan alone is expected to cost carriers in the Golden State up to $9,500 per truck, according to CARB estimates.
CARB hopes to go forward with its plans, in conjunction with proposed regulations by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, to drop diesel sulfur levels and implement drastically reduced emissions standards for new engines.
