BNSF Reports Higher Income, Revenue for 4Q, Year

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.’s fourth-quarter profit jumped 21% to $519 million or $1.42 a share, from $430 million or $1.13 a year earlier, the railroad said Tuesday. The parent of BNSF Railway Co. reported its freight revenue rose 9% to a $3.88 billion from the same quarter a year earlier.The consumer products sector, which includes the rail line’s intermodal unit, saw a 6% increase in revenue to $1.46 billion, BNSF said.For the full year 2006, the company’s earnings rose to $1.9 billion or $5.10 per share, from $1.5 billion or $4.01 in 2005. Full-year revenue jumped 15% to about $15 billion.BNSF, which operates primarily in the western United States, is the No. 2 U.S. freight railroad by revenue, behind Union Pacific Corp.
