Bill Calls for Study of Cargo Tank Rollovers

A provision in the hazmat safety bill pending passage by the full House instructs the Department of Transportation to issue a report summarizing the agency’s research and its efforts to address the growing problem of cargo tank truck rollovers.

The report, which would be due six months after the legislation is passed, was inserted in the hazmat bill after the chairwoman of a subcommittee seeking a ban of flammable liquids in wetlines learned of what she characterized as an even bigger problem in the industry — an increasing number of cargo tank rollovers.

Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), said during a subcommittee hearing last month that she became concerned when she learned there were more than 740 cargo tank rollovers in the past year.
