Bernanke Pledges Continuity at Fed Swearing-In Ceremony

en Bernanke, who was sworn in ceremonially as Federal Reserve chairman Monday, vowed to stick to the central bank's mission of keeping prices stable while promoting growth and jobs in cooperation with Congress, news services reported.

President Bush attended the ceremony, becoming just the third president to visit the Fed, Reuters reported.

“Around the world, the Fed is a symbol of integrity and reliability," the president said. “Its decisions set our nation's monetary policy, assure a sound banking system and help contain the risk that can arise in our financial markets.”



Alan Greenspan's tenure as Fed chairman ended last week the Fed hiked short-term interest rates for a 14th straight time, lifting the federal funds rate, to 4.5%. (Click here for previous coverage.)

Greenspan had been at the fed since 1987.

Bernanke, a career academic economist and teacher who headed the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors prior to his nomination, was officially sworn in last Wednesday in a private ceremony; Monday’s swearing-in was a ceremonial gathering.
