Average Diesel Price Rises 1.6 Cents to $1.584
he Department of Energy said Tuesday the average retail price of diesel fuel in the United States rose 1.6 cents per gallon to $1.584.
Commercial trucking's dominant fuel had declined a total of 2.3 cents over the prior two weeks, according to DOE figures. Diesel is currently 12 cents lower than a year earlier.
The West Coast grouping of states saw its price surge 4.8 cents to $1.789. Its largest state, California, reported a 5.6-cent rise to $1.866, the highest price in the nation.
Used by about a third of commercial trucking, gasoline is down about 6% from a record $1.747 a gallon reported for the week ended Aug. 25.
Analyst Trilby Lundberg told the Associated Press there were several factors behind the recent increases in motor fuels including OPEC's decision to cut oil production on April 1, high crude oil prices and cold winter weather that increased the demand for heating oil.
Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel-filling stations to compile a national snapshot price of diesel.
