Automakers Report Mixed U.S. Auto Sales in June

General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. said their U.S. sales rose 10% each for the month, while Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. deliveries each fell 21%, Bloomberg reported.

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s largest automaker, boosted sales 16%, while affiliate Kia Motors Corp.’s U.S. deliveries jumped 41%.

Nissan Motor Co. recorded an 11%, less than projected, while Chrysler Group LLC’s sales jumped 30%, Bloomberg said.

A drop in gasoline prices lured more pickup truck buyers, with Chrysler reporting a 35% increase in Ram truck sales, the Associated Press reported. Chevrolet’s Silverado truck sales rose 5%.

Total light-vehicle sales rose 7.1% in June from a year earlier to 1.05 million, according to Autodata Corp., Bloomberg reported.

Automakers could have sold more small cars without the supply disruptions in Japan, still ramping up production following that country’s earthquake and tsunami in March, AP reported.

Sales of Toyota’s Prius hybrid fell 61% to 4,340, the lowest level in seven years, while Honda Civic sales plunged 35%. U.S. automakers sold as many small cars as they could make, but they could not meet the demand for small cars alone, AP said.
