he American Transportation Research Institute said July 12 it is seeking data from motor carriers to measure the effects of federal hours-of-service rules regarding split sleeper-berth time.

ATRI is collecting data quarterly in an effort to track changes in driver safety performance and measure it against the overall safety impacts of the HOS rules, which included a more flexible sleeper-berth provision.

The group collected data for the first quarter and is now collecting data for the second quarter that ended June 30. (Click here for previous coverage.)

“The response to ATRI’s first-quarter call for carrier data demonstrated how strongly carriers feel about the latest HOS change,” said Dave Osiecki, American Trucking Associations’ vice president of safety, security and operations.

“With continued participation from those carriers and more, the industry is certain to be provided with a detailed analysis of what the HOS rules changes have meant for safety,” he said.

ATRI, a not-for-profit research organization research arm of the trucking industry, is an affiliate of ATA, which is also studying the sleeper-berth rule. (Click here for previous coverage.)
