ATA Wins EPA SmartWay Award for Fifth Straight Year

American Trucking Associations has been honored for a sixth time, five of them consecutively, with a SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Award from the Environmental Protection Agency.

“EPA commends the Affiliate Challenge honorees for their extraordinary level of commitment, enthusiasm and creativity in supporting EPA’s SmartWay program, and sustainable transportation,” said Christopher Grundler, director of EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “The work in this arena helps to advance the environmental sustainability of commercial transportation and logistics bringing us all closer to achieving the shared goals of efficient goods movement and clean air.”

ATA previously won the SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Award in 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

“For nearly a decade, ATA has been proud to work with the EPA in what we believe is a model for the public and private sectors cooperating to address a significant challenge,” ATA President Bill Graves said. “The effort of industry and government working together to reduce fuel use and emissions is commendable and we look forward to many more years of fruitful partnership with EPA.”

Glen Kedzie, ATA’s energy and environment affairs counsel, is a former EPA attorney.

“SmartWay partners, including many ATA members, have saved nearly $25 billion in fuel costs and more than 170 million barrels of oil and eliminated 73 million metric tons of carbon emissions, 1.5 million tons of NOx and 72,000 tons of particulate matter,” Kedzie said.
