Incoming members of the 2015-2016 America’s Road Team were introduced Jan. 14 at American Trucking Associations’ headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, where they were hailed as the nation’s “best of the best” truck drivers.

ATA Chairman Duane Long called the Road Team captains “ambassadors for life” for the trucking industry, and asked them to be role models for young people.

“Safety will be the biggest topic that you talk about, but I hope that when you meet young people, you will think about how to inspire them to come into this great industry,” said Long, chairman of Raleigh, North Carolina-based Longistics.

America’s Road Team members combined have more than 450 years of road experience and have logged more than 30 million accident-free miles.

The Road Team is sponsored by Volvo Trucks, and drivers’ fleet employers pay their salaries while they are on the road performing their team duties of taking trucking’s message to the public and media around the country.

David Green, a new Road Team member with truckload carrier Werner Enterprises’ “embodies everything that’s positive within the industry,” said Jaime Maus, Werner’s vice president of safety and compliance.

“They’re great ambassadors for the industry,” said less-than-truckload carrier Holland Inc.’s Stephen Blubaugh, vice president of human resources. Holland’s Russell Simpson is a new Road Team captain.

“They’re professional in every way, and as an industry, we need people to understand what a truck driver is,” Blubaugh said after the ceremony.
