merican Trucking Associations said Thursday that ATA Chairman Patrick Quinn has been appointed to the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission.

Quinn, president and co-chairman of truckload carrier U.S. Xpress Enterprises, was appointed by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.).

The commission, set up under federal transportation law, was set up to conduct a comprehensive study of the current condition and future needs of the U.S. surface transportation system and funding alternatives to meet those needs.

Twelve members ultimately will comprise the commission, including Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, who will serve as its chairman.

ATA President Bill Graves expressed gratitude to Frist for appointing a trucking executive, noting the importance of including highway users on the commission.

“This is especially critical as trucking is expected to increase its share of freight movement while congestion points continue to grow across the United States,” he said in a statement.

U.S. Xpress, based in Chattanooga, Tenn., is ranked No. 22 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
