American Natural Gas has completed a new compressed natural gas fueling station in Lancaster, New York, to support grocery retailer Tops Friendly Markets’ new fleet of 55 CNG-powered tractors from Ryder Inc.

Tops, which operates stores in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, announced in November plans to convert its distribution fleet to the alternative fuel.

The new fueling station is expected to supply Tops’ fleet with at least 1.2 million diesel gallon equivalent of CNG per year, ANG said.

“With Ryder’s natural-gas vehicles and the ANG fueling station, we have the confidence that we can get the service and performance we need from our new natural-gas fleet,” said Ron Ferri, senior vice president of distribution and logistics at Tops. “Our operation will be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”

Drew West, CEO of ANG, said, “This Tops project is going to set the pace for the grocery industry. The state-of-the-art, heavy-duty CNG fueling station and strategy will save fuel and protect the environment.”
