American Freightways Announces Rate Increase

Less-than-truckload carrier American Freightways announced Tuesday a rate increase of 5.5%, effective Sept. 1.

Additional adjustments will be made in certain markets and the minimum charge floors will increase by $2.50, the company said.

In July AF reported better than expected earnings for the second quarter and company officials said it was the carrier’s best financial performance since it began operating in 1982.

Over the past month, several large carriers have also announced rate increases. Yellow and CF instituted rate increases of 5.9% and 5.8% at the beginning of August, and Overnite (5.5%) and Con-Way’s less-than-truckload divisions (5.9%) will also raise rates Aug. 14 and Sept. 1, respectively.
