Amazon.com said Jan. 18 that it plans to open a fulfillment center in Coppell, Texas, which will be its ninth in the state.

It already has two fulfillment centers in Coppell, a town of 38,600 people in the northwest corner of Dallas County.

The 1 million-square-foot center will be one of Amazon's robotics network facilities, said Akash Chauhan, Amazon's vice president of North American operations. Amazon's proprietary robotics allow the center to have more inventory on-hand and increase the speed of fulfillment, he said.

But the facility still needs 1,000 full-time workers to run the place.  Another one in Coppell and the South Dallas fulfillment center are part of the robotics network.

"We are so excited to see the Amazon team grow by the thousands here in Coppell," said Coppell Mayor Karen Hunt. "To have a company that provides good compensation and furthering education tuition to help its employees flourish in our city is a point of pride at Coppell City Hall."

Amazon's other North Texas fulfillment centers are in Dallas, Fort Worth and Haslet. Others are in Schertz (near San Antonio) and San Marcos. The first one in Houston is under construction.
