Amazon.com Inc. said it is working with the U.S. Postal Service to begin offering Sunday package delivery in Los Angeles and New York City beginning this week.

The online retailer announced that it plans to roll out the service to a large portion of the country by 2014, including Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Phoenix.

“With this new service, the Postal Service is now delivering packages seven days a week in select cities. Customers can expect the same reliable and valued service that the Postal Service currently provides,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

Amazon had 89 warehouses in 2012, is planning seven more this year and has unveiled plans to increase staff by 5,000 at 17 of its fulfillment centers this year, Bloomberg News reported.
