Answer Theft Reported
Authorities in Queens, N.Y., have arrested two men, claiming that they used dots on watch bands to encode answers for truck-driver licensing exams. Southern Ontario traffic was thrown into chaos Monday when the eastbound Queen Elizabeth Way was shut down from 5:30 a.m. until evening due to a car-truck collision, and Highway 401 was closed in the afternoon after fire from hoses on a truck hauling an explosive chemical forced that truck to pull over. A subsequent two-truck crash made it worse, and the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard were shut down as well.
Teamsters Seek More Prosecutions in Fund Raising
Following the Friday fraud and embezzlement conviction of William Hamilton, who was political director for the Teamsters when Ron Carey was union president, current President James P. Hoffa wants the government to prosecute other alleged participants in a scheme to fund Carey's reelection campaign unlawfully. He did not specify Carey, however. The scheme moved union money totaling $885,000 to the campaign.Last month saw grand jury testimony by onetime Democratic National Committee finance director Richard Sullivan claiming that top President Clinton fundraiser Terry McAuliffe developed a scheme under which his party would find a $50,000 donor to the Carey campaign and the Teamsters would give a Democratic fundraising organization $500,000. FleetPride Acquires Southwest Virginia Truck Parts Inc.
The truck-parts distributor FleetPride said it has acquired Southwest Virginia Truck Parts, of Grundy, Va. Southwest Virginia Truck Parts adds "depth to our already strong presence in the state of Virginia, which is a major hub of the trucking and mining industries," said FleetPride President and CEO John Greisch.
