Industry Leaders Shying Away From Upcoming Cargo Theft Summit
A summit meeting scheduled for the day before the annual conference of the National Cargo Security Council in New Orleans next week may contain only a handful of the chiefs of major players in the air freight industry. Council Chairman Lou Tyska had been hoping that carriers, consolidators, forwarders, and truckers that handle pickups and deliveries to the terminals would attend the summit, in which shippers, transport providers, law enforcement, and government leaders will ideally sit down together and dissect the estimated $12 billion drained from the economy as a result of lost goods. However, many companies view the discussing of cargo security in an open forum as a potential hazard on their reputations and businesses. Industry observers are waiting to see whether or not the American Trucking Associations will be represented by a senior person from its Transportation Loss Prevention Security Council. TIP Offers Free Retrofit to Meet Reflective Tape Standards
TIP Intermodal, a unit of GE Capital, is offering to retrofit all its rolling stock equipment made before Dec. 1, 1993 -- over 30,000 pieces of equipment in all -- with reflective tape without charging customers for the service. A recent regulation from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration mandates a standard pattern of tape for all trailers and chassis; until recently, only new chassis and trailers were forced to have the tape. The first pieces to have the tape installed will be those chassis and trailers that are empty or waiting to be loaded; the remainder will follow on a rotational basis and with the least amount of disruption. ingle-Source SellingFedEx is set this week to roll out Project Arise, a sales initiative whereby one representative is given the authority to write out individual contracts pulling air and ground services into single packages fit and priced precisely to an individual customer's needs. The new bundling tactic, which actually began in March, should help FedEx in its fight to win business over United Parcel Service--the company's rival has been using the strategy for more than a decade.Traffic World (05/29/00) Vol. 9, No. 262; P. 33; Krause, Kristin S.
