3 Shots Fired Into Overnite Truck

An Overnite Transportation trucker and his wife were just missed by three bullets shot into their truck Tuesday on Interstate 240 near the carrier's Memphis, Tenn., hub. The unidentified Oklahoma trucker said he saw a car following him from the hub and heard five shots as the car passed his truck at the South Parkway exit.

This is the second shooting of an Overnite driver near Memphis since December. Crime Stoppers head Lt. Ray Hopkins said it is also the fifth time an Overnite trucker has been assaulted since October.

Company spokesman Ira Rosenfeld said the Memphis terminal seems to be a focus of violence that has taken place during the Teamsters strike that began in October; 15 incidents have occurred in the Memphis region. The Teamsters' Overnite coordinator, David Cameron, said neither the union nor the community would tolerate such behavior.

There is a $100,000 reward for information that helps bring about a conviction in the Tuesday shooting, said Hopkins, and the company has put up a $1 million reward regarding the Dec. 1 shooting. Memphis Commercial Appeal Online (01/06/00); Conley, Chris; Thompson, Richard

St. Paul Trucking Moratorium Remains in Effect

Overriding a mayoral veto, the St. Paul (Minn.) City Council voted Wednesday to retain a moratorium on new trucking facilities that will last until March 1 as the city studies trucking regulations. The council intends to look over policies, and there could be new zoning rules for trucking terminals.

The council has now overridden two mayoral vetoes regarding trucking facilities in the last six months; the previous one concerned restrictions on size and operations the council established for a planned warehouse. Those restrictions survived not only the mayor's veto but a court challenge by the warehouse's developer. Minneapolis Star Tribune Online (01/06/00); Duchschere, Kevin

New Jersey Toll Increase Vote Could Be Delayed

A vote on the proposed New Jersey Turnpike toll hike might be delayed as turnpike officials study all the public comments that have been collected, which number over 1,000. After the comments are compiled, Gov. Christie Whitman and the turnpike commission will receive them.

Although the commission could hold a vote in January, the proposal first needs the approval of the state treasurer and the governor, who said she will not decide whether to approve before reviewing the public comments. Heavy Duty Trucking Online (01/06/00)

Mexico's Traffic Death Rate Surpasses Nafta Neighbors

According to the new North American Transportation Highlights report, Mexico has a traffic fatality rate of 7.5 per 10,000 vehicles, while the other rate for the other two Nafta countries is two per 10,000 vehicles. The United States has defied Nafta provisions with restrictions on Mexican trucks, partly because of safety. No distinction was made in the report between car and truck fatalities.
