After 14 Years, CDL Gets Overhaul

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The 14-year-old commercial driver license program is getting a 16-point major tune-up mandated by Congress, with federal regulators now crafting the details of the revisions.

The changes include authority to suspend a truck driver’s CDL for offenses committed in a passenger vehicle, reform of the medical examination process, improvements in state records and new powers for the federal government over trucker licensing.

These changes were ordered in the 1999 law that also created the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Meanwhile, state licensing officials are reviewing the process of testing CDL applicants.
