But well into the modern age of just-in-time logistics, warehouses still exist. The warehouse of this era, though, is much changed from its ancestors.

Today, say the third-party logistics providers that lease and run them, contemporary warehouses are often the technologically advanced staging grounds for automotive manufacturing or the base camps for the distribu-tion of crucial components and machinery.
