This edition of Transport Topics from Oct. 27, 1986 highlights the passage of legislation that marked the beginning of the process that has led to current efforts to establish minimum training standards for entry-level commercial vehicle drivers.

The bill signed by President Reagan directed the Secretary of Transportation to issue a single national license to applicants who undergo a driving test in the class of vehicle they will be licensed to drive, plus complete a written exam and meet minimum physical requirements.
