Pa. State Police Issue 790 Hazmat Citations

Pennsylvania State Police said Wednesday that its officers inspected nearly 1,600 commercial vehicles transporting hazardous materials and issued 790 citations during a one-day enforcement in late March.

Acting Commissioner Frank Noonan said the initiative — dubbed the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safe Transportation of Placarded Substances, or S.T.O.P.S. — was aimed at ensuring that trucks carrying hazardous materials are safe and do not present a danger to other motorists on Pennsylvania highways.

The teams placed 174 trucks and 43 drivers out of service and handed out 1,286 written warnings for vehicle and driver violations, Noonan said, adding that unsafe brakes and record of duty infractions were the most common violations cited.
