Grede Producing Lightweight Castings for Truck Applications

Grede, a producer of cast iron components for the transportation industry, is developing, lightweight chassis, powertrains and drivetrain components for heavy-duty truck applications using a ductile iron alloy called SiboDur.

The company will be showing SiboDor components at the Mid-American Trucking Show this week in Louisville, Ky.

SiboDur competes favorably with aluminum in terms of weight reduction, and its high strength characteristics provide cost, fatigue life and manufacturability advantages over austempered ductile iron and forged steel, the company said.

Heavy-duty truck manufacturers worldwide also are using, developing and testing SiboDur for safety-critical parts with high stress and torque requirements. This includes steering knuckles, differential cases, control arms, hubs, brackets, engine mounts, crankshafts and suspension links.

SiboDur was developed by Switzerland-based Georg Fischer Automotive AG. Grede has an exclusive license to produce the alloy in North America.
