Anthony Foxx was sworn in as the nation’s 17th secretary of transportation Tuesday at U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington.

The private ceremony was attended by Foxx’s wife, Samara, and their two children, Hillary and Zachary. For his swearing-in, Foxx used a Bible that belonged to his great-grandparents, Peter and Ida Kelly.

Foxx, who was confirmed by the Senate in a 100-0 vote late last week, succeeds Ray LaHood as transportation secretary.

Foxx, who stepped down as mayor of Charlotte, N.C., on Monday, was sworn in by Judge Nathaniel Jones, whom Foxx worked for as a law clerk in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Foxx is spending his first full day meeting DOT employees and holding meetings on key issues facing the department, including transportation safety and hurricane and severe weather preparedness, DOT said in a statement.
