Carrier Transicold on April 11 launched an upgraded series of refrigeration units for midsized and large trucks, the company said.

Athens, Ga.-based Carrier said the 40XR and 50XR refrigeration units would boost the efficiency and sustainability of local and regional deliveries by grocery, food service, produce and pharmaceutical businesses. The XR series succeeds Carrier’s X series models.

A Carrier spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment April 12 on the level of the efficiency gains.

The 40XR is designed for bodies 12 to 18 feet long. Its 50XR sister model is aimed at trucks with a cargo area of up to 20 feet in length. Carrier said that as direct-drive units, the belt-driven refrigerant compressors are powered by the truck engine, eliminating the weight and cost associated with having a separate engine for the refrigeration unit.

Carrier’s latest models will use R-452A refrigerant rather than R-404A refrigerant, halving the global warming potential of the prior models, the company said. It added that the XR models support a company aim of reducing its customers’ carbon footprint by more than one gigaton as part of its 2030 Environmental, Social and Governance goals.
