Truck technology vendor Zonar Systems has hired former Omnitracs executive Vikas Jain as chief operating officer.

Jain will play an “integral role” in guiding Zonar’s business strategy and its plans for continued growth, including mergers and acquisitions, the telematics provider said in the July 31 announcement.

Zonar, headquartered in Seattle, offers electronic vehicle inspection and fleet tracking and management products to for-hire and private fleets.

“We are excited to welcome Vikas to the Zonar team,” CEO Brett Brinton said. “Vikas brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and success within the transportation telematics industry. We look forward to his vision and insight as we continue to grow and innovate to serve the needs of commercial and public fleets.”

Before joining Zonar, Jain was vice president of product and program management at Omnitracs and general manager for its FleetRisk Advisors and Sylectus subsidiaries.

Omnitracs, formerly part of Qualcomm Inc., offers onboard technology and fleet management software. Qualcomm sold the business to Vista Equity Partners for $800 million in November.

Prior to his time at Omnitracs, Jain was director of sales at Sierra Wireless, where he led the company’s automotive business in North America.

He also was executive vice president and chief technology officer at PeopleNet.

Another former Omnitracs executive, Norm Ellis, recently left the company and became chief operating officer at asset-tracking provider I.D. Systems Inc. Ellis had been vice president of sales, services and marketing at Omnitracs.
