Click here to write a Letter to the Editor.ireless-technology vendor Xora Inc. has asked the Department of Transportation for an exemption to the hours-of-service rules that would permit the company to market cellphones equipped with global positioning systems capable of tracking and logging the time truck drivers spend behind the wheel.
Xora has been working on the project with Nextel Communications, which also has asked DOT to clear the way for GPS-based automated driver logs. However, while Xora has asked for an exemption, Nextel has requested an actual change in the rules that would allow HOS compliance via wireless handsets, that company said.
