major phase of a multi-year project on the Capital Beltway — Interstate 495 surrounding the nation’s capital — reopened the highway early Sunday after the weekend's construction work was finished ahead of schedule, officials said.

ohn Undeland, a spokesman for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project that is building a new span across the Potomac River, said in a statement that two lanes of the Capital Beltway reopened ahead of schedule Sunday after paving two lanes of new surrounding connecting ramps.

Officials had originally planned to keep the lanes closed until Monday morning, Undeland said.

But Undeland said officials were able to accelerate the construction schedule after determining they needed half as much asphalt as previously thought for the project, which began Friday.

Officials will close a Maryland portion of I-495 in the next several weeks for a similar paving project, Undeland said.
