Wickham Steps Down as Roadway CEO

Roadway Corp. announced Wednesday that Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael W. Wickham will step down from his position as CEO effective March 26.

Wickham, who has been CEO since May 2001, will continue on in the position of chairman of the Akron, Ohio-based company's board of directors.

Upon Wickham's retirement, James D. Staley will move from president of Roadway Express, the company’s largest subsidiary, to CEO of Roadway Corp.

"I have had the privilege of working for our great company for 35 years," Wickham said in a statement. "It is time for me to turn the day-to-day operation of the company over to Jim Staley."

Wickham, 56, cited the recent agreement with the Teamsters union on the National Master Freight Agreement in saying it is "a good time for me to step away and let our new team lead" Roadway.

Replacing Staley as president of Roadway Express will be Robert L. Stull, the company said in its statement. Stull has been serving as the vice president of new venture commerce at Roadway, the company said. He will be replaced by Robert W. Obee, who is currently the chief information officer for Roadway Express.

Wickham was named chairman and CEO of Roadway Corp. on May 30, 2001 when the holding company was formed. Prior to that, he served in the same positions of Roadway Express beginning in March 1998.

The company said that Wickham “spent his entire career with Roadway,” starting with the company in 1968 after his graduation from the University of Delaware.

Less-than-truckload carrier Roadway Corp. is ranked No. 7 on the 2002 Transport Topics 100 listing of the largest trucking companies in the United States and Canada.
