ew toll hikes will take effect Jan. 1 on the West Virginia Turnpike, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

The increases, approved last week, have drawn criticism from several lawmakers and business owners who say they are an unfair burden on southern West Virginia residents and companies that use the 88-mile highway, AP said.

The rate for five-axle commercial trucks at three toll plazas will increase about 65%, to $7 from $4.25. Passenger car tolls at will rise 60%, to $2 from $1.25.

Gov. Joe Manchin (D) said a 2004 law that mandated a new $55 million interchange at Shady Spring in Raleigh County was a factor in the toll hikes, AP said.

Two state lawmakers said they did not know a bill they voted for last year would contribute to toll increases on the turnpike, AP reported.
