Werner Enterprises Inc. finished a project to improve and expand the truckload company’s Laredo, Texas, terminal, the company announced Dec. 14.

The work included the development of 10 existing acres to build a second entrance for equipment, 110 additional trailer parking spots and doubling the number of inspection bays from four to eight. Werner also bought 20-acres next door to facilitate future expansion.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based carrier, which ranks No. 15 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers, said the increased volume at the cross-border terminal with Mexico necessitated the expansion.

“This is a significant milestone that involved more than two years of planning, construction and execution of a multiple-phase project to improve traffic patterns and enhance productivity in the area,” said Randy Kraft, vice president of terminal management.

Earlier this year, Werner announced that it would be investing more than $400 million into its “5T’s” initiative: trucks, trailers, talent, terminals and technology.

“This is one of many large-scale projects that are under way at multiple facilities across the country. It is also a direct result of our leadership team talking and listening to our professional drivers and meeting their needs by providing them with the newest and safest equipment at the nicest facilities in the industry,” Kraft said.
