al-Mart Stores is embarking on a new set of environmental goals to reduce its energy use, double its trucks' fuel efficiency, minimize its packaging and pressure thousands of companies in its supply chain to follow its lead, the New York Times reported.

Embracing energy-conscious and environmentally conscious goals will help the company's bottom line and its customers' needs, Wal-Mart Chief Executive Officer H. Lee Scott told the paper in an interview published Tuesday.

al-Mart's trucks have a fuel efficiency of about 6.5 miles per gallon, the Times reported. Some environmental and energy groups said it could do better, reaching as high as 13 mpg, the paper said.

Wal-Mart is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of North American private fleets. According to company data, it has about 6,750 trucks and 44,500 trailers.
