olvo Trucks North America said Monday the company had shipped its first U.S.-built Volvo D12 engine for installation in a Volvo truck.
The engine was presented Friday to AAA Cooper Transportation at in Hagerstown, Md., on Friday. Previously, Volvo engines were produced in Sweden and exported to North America.
AAA Cooper is a regional less-than-truckload carrier based in Dothan, Ala.
Friday marked the formal start of series production of Volvo engines in North America at the Volvo power train facility in Hagerstown, the company said. The 12-liter engine is being built on a new, state-of-the-art production line at the plant.
“Building engines in Hagerstown is an advantage for Volvo and our customers, since it sharply reduces the amount of time involved in shipping a finished engine to our truck plant in Dublin, Va.,” said Peter Karlsten, VTNA's chief executive officer.
