Volvo AB Unveils Hybrid Powertrain in Prototype Mack Truck

WASHINGTON — Volvo AB and Mack Trucks Inc. last week unveiled a hybrid prototype of a heavy-duty Mack construction truck and company officials said their diesel-electric power supply will cut fuel costs 30% for stop-and-go trucks and buses while running much cleaner.Volvo AB President Leif Johansson, Mack President Paul Vikner and Sten-Ake Aronsson, chief engineer and senior vice president of Volvo Powertrain Corp., introduced the new engine here Jan. 11, showing a Mack Granite construction truck outfitted with hybrid technology.“The new engine offers the greatest potential for fuel savings and clean technology where it is most needed, in urban centers around the world,” Johansson, also an engineer, said.For the full story, see the Jan. 22 print edition of Transport Topics.
