irginia Department of Transportation chief Philip Shucet said last week he was resigning as commissioner at the end of June, the Washington Post reported.

Shucet said that he wanted to spend more time near his family and that he would return to the private sector career he left to take over VDOT, the paper reported.

When Shucet took over VDOT in April 2002, it was reeling from key personnel losses and promised projects it could not afford, the Post said. Gov. Mark Warner (D) described it as an agency in “crisis.”

Warner and government and private groups credited Shucet with instituting practices that helped turn the department around, the Post said.

He also launched Project Dashboard, an online accounting of the agency's construction performance that has won industry awards, the paper reported.

VDOT plans to add maintenance, engineering and other performance goals to that system this month, the Post said.
