In Virginia, Scott Rigell vs. Suzanne Patrick: Why You Should Care

Each day this week, three times per day, Transport Topics reporter Eugene Mulero looks at one of 15 key congressional races that affect transportation interests, and explains Why You Should Care.

Today: Virginia's 2nd District – Incumbent Republican Scott Rigell vs. Democratic challenger Suzanne Patrick.

Even though he is considered a member of the 2010 tea party class, Rep. Scott Rigell has recently been positioning himself as a moderate to win support from independents and Democrats in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. The incumbent recently noted in a debate that the coastal district’s aging infrastructure is not adequate for withstanding major storms, such as Superstorm Sandy. The district is home to large ports that help the region’s trucking industry. His opponent, Democrat Suzanne Patrick, is a retired U.S. Naval Reserve commander. Patrick supports expanding funding for infrastructure in the state, and, if elected, she would oppose efforts to minimize the role of federal transportation agencies.
