n order to stem annual toll revenue losses of $1.4 million, the Virginia Department of Transportation has installed cameras at several toll plazas across the state to catch motorists who use toll roads without paying the required fee.

The new cameras will photograph the license plates of motorists crossing through toll plazas without paying a toll, the state transportation department said in a statement.

Violators will receive notices via mail asking them to pay the toll they skipped in addition to a $25 fine.

The cameras, which have been installed on the Dulles Toll Road in Northern Virginia, the Powhite Parkway Extension near Richmond and the Coleman Bridge in Hampton Roads, are currently in a testing phase. Notices of toll violations are scheduled to be sent out beginning in January.
