Video System Said to Speed Operations at U.S. Ports

The new operators of an intermodal terminal at the Port of Newark, N.J., say they will process trucks in half the normal time by using video cameras to identify containers before they reach the gate.

Port Newark Container Terminal LLC joins a handful of management companies that have boosted productivity by investing in imaging systems that automate the entry and exit of trucks at ports and rail yards.

By electronically matching serial numbers printed on containers with the manifest on file, trucks can be quickly sorted, directed and tracked to any location in the terminal.
