rucking companies involved in a dispute with truck drivers at the Port of Vancouver, B.C., unanimously rejected a mediator's proposal Sunday that would have ended a strike that has kept the port closed since June 27, the Canadian Press reported.
Truck drivers had earlier approved the measure by a 90% vote. Had both sides accepted the deal, the port could have been back in operation by Tuesday, CP said.
Diverted cargo containers continued to stack up at nearby ports.
While both sides sat down together July 27, Craig Paterson, the lawyer who represents the 1,200 driver members of the striking Vancouver Container Truck Association, said he was not confident an agreement would be reached anytime soon.
“So far, the two sides are miles apart,” he told Transport Topics. “We’re always hopeful, but we don’t expect a resolution very soon.
