USA Truck Inc. appointed Jason Bates on April 19 to become the company’s next chief financial officer, plucking away Swift Transportation’s vice president of finance.

The CFO post was vacant for a large portion of 2016 until James Reed left Interstate Distributor Co. to take the job. However, Reed was promoted about three months later to CEO when Randy Rogers resigned his post.

“Among my immediate objectives as CEO has been assembling leaders who embrace the intensity and accountability necessary to improve the company’s financial performance and enhance shareholder value," Reed said in a statement. "Jason not only embodies all of those qualities, he brings an outstanding reputation in our industry.”

Bates joins Reed and Jim Craig as the newly established leadership team attempting to turn around a carrier that lost $7.7 million dollars in 2016 after earning $17 million in profits combined in 2014 and 2015.

Swift ranks No. 6 and USA Truck ranks No. 53 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
